I am an ecologist who studies planktonic organisms in marine and fresh waters. The research emphasis in my lab is on protists (algae and protozoa) and their trophic interactions, though lab members have worked with a variety of organisms, including zooplankton, zooanthids, salamanders and terrapins. We have investigated effects of temperature, UV radiation, dissolved organic matter, nutrients, toxins and plastics on aquatic environments. A major topic in my research program throughout my career involves the physiology and ecological importance of mixotrophic protists that use both photosynthetic and phagotrophic nutrition.
