Carol Manhart, assistant professor of chemistry at Temple University, has earned a five-year National Institutes of Health (NIH) Maximizing Investigators Research Award to study how proteins repair DNA in cells. Unrepaired DNA can lead to diseases in humans such as cancer.
"DNA repair is a naturally occurring process in organisms," said Manhart. "In humans, DNA repair operates, in part, to prevent disease such as cancer. In turn, when DNA repair proteins fail to do their jobs, diseases can develop, such as Lynch syndrome, an inherited disorder...
Temple University recent graduate Gabrielle Widjaja never expected to be involved in the type of research she has undertaken with the Temple Ambler Field Station."Certainly, no one expected a tornado to hit the Ambler Campus. I think what is amazing is that the Field Station has taken this extremely difficult circumstance and opened up entirely new research opportunities," said Widjaja, who graduated from Temple with a degree in Biochemistry, a major offer by Temple's College of Science and Technology. "You have to adapt to what you are given. Even in the lab, most experiments...
The Temple Ambler Field Station is finding research and educational opportunities in the aftermath of an EF-2 tornado.
"The tornado provided a unique opportunity to study and teach lessons on the effects of climate change and the recovery of the forests right at our doorstep," says Amy Freestone, professor of biology at the College of Science and Technology.
About 1,100 trees were either uprooted or damaged from the destructive climate-driven disturbance of the tornado. Some of the Temple Forest Observatory's biggest trees—a 140.6 cm in diameter tulip...

Maria Lorenz, professor of instruction in the Department of Mathematics, has earned Temple University's Great Teacher Award.
Established in 1988 by the Board of Trustees, the Temple University Great Teacher Awards recognize faculty members annually for their continuous excellence in teaching. Each award carries a stipend of $15,000, and each awardee receives a commemorative sculpture and framed certificate. In addition, each recipient's name is engraved on the Great Teachers Wall in the Founder's Garden. The awards are presented at a special convocation...
A conference on recent results and new applications of numerical linear algebra and matrix theory will honor the work of Professor Daniel Szyld of Temple University's Department of Mathematics. The conference will feature a public lecture by Volker Mehrmann, Technische Universität Berlin, on "Digital Twins: Modeling, Simulation and Control of Modern Energy Systems" scheduled for March 24 at 4:00 p.m. in the Science Education and Research Center, room 116."Daniel Szyld is a leader in numerical linear algebra, a field of computational mathematics focused on the design and...
From championing the increasing diversity of physics to addressing its role in solving some of society's biggest challenges, the Department of Physics will celebrate a century of physics at Temple University this April 1.
Alumni, faculty, students and friends of the department can join with us for a virtual and inperson symposium and an in-person reception in the Science Education and Research Center on Temple's Main Campus. Starting at 2:00 p.m., talks will highlight the past, present, and future of the Physics Department at...
Rongsheng (Ross) Wang, assistant professor of chemistry, has earned a five-year, $700,000 award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to develop medicinal chemistry-aided imaging techniques of cell components that could lead to faster diagnosis of diseases such as cancer and inflammatory disorders.
His research targets histone deacetylases (HDACs), a family of enzymes that have crucial roles in numerous biological processes including regulating the expression and activity of numerous proteins involved in the initiation and progression of both...
The College of Science and Technology's Sbarro Institute for Molecular Medicine and Cancer Research is looking into a possible link between cancer cases and the environment in North Philadelphia. Led by Professor Antonio Giordano, director of the institute, the Health Equity Research Project also includes Jackie Sackie, CST '18,'21, a Sbarro researcher and adjunct instructor in CST. In the middle of a challenging academic year that included in-person, hybrid and virtual learning we are grateful to our supportive mathematics community. We want to thank our faculty members who took on additional teaching that enabled the department to serve our thousands of students. We have heard both the successes and the frustrations, and this experience will allow us to learn and grow stronger as a departmentFaculty highlights include the impressive academic background of our newest faculty hire, number theorist Jaclyn Lang; Associate Professor Matthew Stover's...

Professor Sergei Pond is part of an international team publishing research suggesting that new conditions are contributing to the faster development of variants of the Covid -19 virus.
Titled "The emergence and ongoing convergent evolution of the SARS-CoV-2 N501Y lineages," the paper appears in Cell, a peer-reviewed journal. Pond and his Temple colleagues collaborated with scientists at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. University of Glasgow in the United Kingdom, Pennsylvania State University and several other research institutions.

Chair's message
This fall, I am teaching a First Year Seminar to 20 CST undergraduates and a weekly seminar to the Chemistry Department first-year graduate students. We're all new to what we're doing: the undergrads to college with all that entails; the grad students to being teaching assistants, taking graduate classes and choosing a research group; and me to being department chair. We're all excited about the future and just a little nervous.
The outgoing chair, Dan Strongin, led our department through incredibly challenging times, including COVID (which unfortunately...
