Established through the generosity of alumni, friends, corporation and foundations.
Many College of Science and Technology (CST) scholarships were created to honor or memorialize a favorite professor, a cherished classmate or a beloved spouse. These scholarships are awarded annually based on the criteria set forth by the donor. CST scholarships include:
Abraham and Ruth Clearfield Scholarship
Awarded to full-time undergraduates majoring in chemistry, or another physical science, with excellent academic performance, with preference given to students who are graduates of South Philadelphia High School.
Albert Brown Chemistry Scholarship
Established in 2010 by Albert B. Brown, CST ’64, for United States citizens and permanent resident students who plan to pursue industrial chemistry as a profession, provides scholarships for undergraduate students majoring in chemistry who demonstrate high academic achievement.
Andrea Broad Scholarship in Biological Sciences
Established in 2000 by William E.S. Browning in 2000, in honor of Andrea Broad, CLA ’73, LAW ’79, to provide for an outstanding undergraduate student majoring in the biological sciences.
Computer and Information Sciences Junior Scholarship
Established in 1997, the purpose of the fund is to award annual scholarships to an outstanding junior in the CIS department.
Dr. Lorraine H. Kligman Endowed Scholarship
Established in 1998 by Dr. Kligman, CST ’66, CLA ’74, to provide scholarships for non-traditional sophomore biology student who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement with preference given to students who are single parents.
Dr. Muriel Apfelberg Brownstein Science and Math Education Endowed Scholarship Fund
The purpose is to provide scholarship support for students enrolled for full-time study in the College of Science and Technology’s TUteach program, who have demonstrated financial need and a commitment and ability to teach.
Dr. Paul G. & Beatrice Zackon Physics Scholarship
Established in 2011 by Richard B. Zackon, to provide scholarships for outstanding students majoring in physics who have financial need.
Edward and Frances Fineman Scholarship
Established in 1995 by Robert M. Fineman, CST ’66, in memory of his parents, to provide scholarships for undergraduate chemistry students who have financial need and demonstrated academic achievement.
Florence R. Berg Scholarship
Established in 2008 by Florence R. Berg, CST ’49, to provide scholarships for students enrolled in the College of Science and Technology who are conducting summer research.
Francis James Sholomskas Memorial Scholarship
This award will be given to juniors or seniors majoring in mathematics.
Hazel M. Tomlinson, PhD Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1995 by the estate of Hazel M. Tomlinson, CST ’26, ’28, a longtime member of the Department of Chemistry faculty, to provide scholarships for undergraduate chemistry students who have demonstrated excellence in academic achievement and financial need.
John A. Poole Memorial Scholarship
Established in memory of John A. Poole, distinguished professor of chemistry from 1964 to 1999, this prize is awarded to Junior or senior in the department of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, or Physics who has demonstrated academic excellence, financial need and appreciation for the arts.
Jules J. Sheldon, D.D.S Endowed Scholarship
Established in 2010 by a bequest from Jules J. Sheldon, CST ’43, DEN ’47, to provide scholarships for students enrolled in the College of Science and Technology.
Mark Berger Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1990 by Michael R. Berman, CST ’66, in memory of his classmate Mark Berger, to provide scholarships to biology students who have demonstrated academic achievement.
Morna Brennen Memorial Scholarship
Established in 2008 by Kenneth R. Brennen, PhD, CST ’62, ’66, in memory of his daughter, to provide scholarships for students enrolled in the College of Science and Technology who plan to pursue a degree in math and/or science teaching certification through TUteach or another program.
Seda Tarzian Scholarship
Established in 2006 by Seda Tarzian, CST ’48, the scholarship is presented to academically talented students majoring in the sciences, with preference given to those who have experienced socioeconomic or educational disadvantages. The scholarship recipient is determined by the College of Science and Technology.
Shirley and Bernard Brown Scholarship
Established in 1995 by Shirley, CST ’47, and Bernard, CST ’45, Brown to provide scholarships to one junior or one senior chemistry student who has demonstrated academic achievement.
