Two undergraduate researchers from the College of Science and Technology earned top awards at the 89th Annual Intercollegiate Student Chemists Convention (ISCC), one of the nation’s longest-running conferences dedicated to undergraduate research in the chemical sciences.
Stephen Autieri received second place in inorganic chemistry, while Camilla Tahirova earned first place in physical chemistry. Both students conduct research in the laboratory of Eric Borguet, Hazel Tomlinson Professor of Chemistry, and presented their findings at the convention, held this year at Ursinus College.
ISCC provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to present original research through judged oral presentations. Participants deliver a 12-minute presentation followed by a question-and-answer session before a panel of judges and fellow researchers.
Autieri’s award-winning presentation, “Utilizing Metal Oxyhydroxides as Nanozymes for Epoxide Ring-Opening Reactions,” explored the catalytic potential of metal oxyhydroxides in chemical synthesis. Tahirova’s presentation, “Applications of Metal Oxyhydroxides as Nanozymes for Catalytic ATP Hydrolysis,” examined how these materials can mimic enzyme activity in biologically relevant reactions.
“The ISCC was a great opportunity to present my research and connect with and learn about the research of other undergraduates in chemistry,” said Autieri. “I am thankful and honored to have received an award at this event, and I thank my colleagues and mentors in the Borguet group for the resources and support.”
The students’ research was mentored by CST doctoral researcher Thanuka Ranatunga, and manuscripts detailing their findings are expected to be submitted for publication in the near future.

The awards reflect the strength of CST’s undergraduate research programs and the mentorship opportunities available to students in the Department of Chemistry. Through hands-on laboratory experiences, students contribute to cutting-edge research while developing the skills needed for careers in science and innovation.
