Tips from current students

What you should know

1. The sheer number of resources at Temple University! Places like the writing center, certain clubs, gyms, public spaces, the library, fields/courts; and free tools like Microsoft Office and Adobe (CREATIVE CLOUD), etc.

2. Don’t feel pressured to know exactly what you want to do after college. Use your time here at Temple to learn about all the opportunities available in and outside of your major. Use your GenEds as a chance to broaden your interests. You might end up with completely different goals than you originally planned.

3. Make connections! Don’t be afraid to talk with your professors, fellow students, and Temple staff members. It’s one of the main ways you’ll jumpstart whatever career you choose.

4. Participate in class! Participation is not only a big part of your grade, but a great way to learn and make connections.

5. Go out and enjoy all the events that Temple has to offer, even when something is outside of your comfort zone. This is a great opportunity to meet people and make new friends.

6. GO TO FACULTY OFFICE HOURS!! Use this time to better understand class material or to get to know your professors.

7. Don’t be afraid of change.

8. Look into all the programs and scholarship opportunities that can help you pay for tuition. Check out cst.temple.edu/academics/scholarships-and-awards.

9. This won’t apply to everyone, but you might have to learn to live with someone who you may not get along with.

10. Get to know your CST Academic Advisors. They are there to help you!

Student wisdom
  •  “Act upon your need to go to CST advising right away! The advising fills up very fast and you want to avoid wait.”
  • “What surprised me most was how much time management can really help you out. It’s an absolute necessity to break up your assignments as soon as you get them instead of trying to knock them all out at once.”
  •  “I was surprised by how collaborative the environment is. Being a science major, I expected a super competitive, cut-throat environment but people here genuinely love helping each other succeed and are proud of each other and that's the way it should be.”
  • “Earn a really high GPA in your first year to avoid struggling as the classes will get harder.”
  • “Sit in the front of lectures, it is very helpful and you get way less distracted!”
  • “Go to office hours! I was reluctant in the first semester and never got my doubts cleared, which obviously affected my test scores. The professors are great so build relationships!”
  • “I would recommend to fully plan out a basic week. Start off with your class schedule and studying times for each course. You should have a study session for each lecture and an overall study session for the week on the weekend.”
  • “No matter how difficult your major will get, keep going, you are going to make a difference in the world one day.”
  • “Stay on top of your classwork, maintain a consistent schedule, and make an effort to get to know your teachers.”
  • “Pick your classes early.”
