His work spans computing education, community-driven design, and assistive technology, with recent projects examining how generative AI shapes learning, collaboration, and accessibility, including both the benefits and potential harms. He also develops agentic AI systems designed to promote more reflective and intentional use of AI tools.
MacNeil directs the Temple HCI Lab, and his research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research, and Temple University’s College of Science and Technology. Beyond research, he engages in community-driven design as faculty director of the OwlHacks hackathon, former co-director of the Design for San Diego designathon, and as one of two U.S. Representatives to the World Design Organization’s Young Designers Circle.
