Research courses in Biology

Biology students interested in research may do so at a variety of levels based on their preparation.

Biology 1082 - Introduction to Independent Research

Biology 1082 is designed for students who want to begin research at early stage. Research under the direction of a faculty member in the Department of Biology or affiliated department.

All students must obtain the approval of the Biology Faculty Advisor, who will complete the registration.

Biology 2082 - Independent Research I

Biology 2082 is designed for students who have completed one of the introductory Biology major courses and want to begin research. The research may be with a researcher in the Biology department or with an approved outside researcher. As it is an exploratory level research course, it is not repeatable for credit.

Biology 3082 - Independent Research II

Biology 3082 is designed for students who have completed both of the introductory Biology major courses and have begun taking at least one of the 3 advanced Biology core courses. The research may be with a researcher in the Biology department or with an approved outside researcher. This course is repeatable.

Biology 4291 - Extradepartmental Research

Biology 4291 is designed for seniors majoring in Biology who have completed 2 of the 3 advanced Biology core courses, and are registered for the third if the third course is offered during the term in which they are doing research. The course may be used to meet part of the requirements for Distinction in Biology. Up to 6 s.h. may be taken for standard grades.

The research is under the direction of an approved outside researcher

Biology 4391 - Accelerated Research in Biology

Biology 4391 is designed for seniors majoring in Biology who have completed 2 of the 3 advanced Biology core courses, and are registered for the third if the third course is offered during the term in which they are doing research.

The course may be used to meet part of the requirements for Distinction in Biology. The research is under the direction of a researcher in the Biology department. Students who complete a minimum of 6 s.h. of Bio 4391 may petition for it to count for one Biology elective course.

Biology 4396 - Advanced Study in Biology

BIOL 4396 is a writing-intensive research course focused around the independent research of a senior undergraduate in one of the research labs in Biology, or another approved school or department (research mentor must be approved by course instructor or major advisor). Ideally, the student will have conducted independent research in the mentor's laboratory prior to taking this course, although that is not a requirement.

Note: Students will be placed in major-specific sections that require permission of the Biology faculty advisor.

Biology 4591 - Research in Neuroscience

Biology 4591 is designed for seniors majoring in Neuroscience—Cellular & Molecular majors who have completed 2 of the 3 advanced Biology core courses, and are registered for the third if the third course is offered during the term in which they are doing research. This course may be used to meet part of the requirements for Distinction in Neuroscience—Cellular & Molecular.

Biology 3685 - Externship Studies

Biology 3685 (Externship Studies) provides an opportunity for students who are participating in structured internship or externship programs to receive departmental credit for their efforts.
