Our programs focus on research experiences culminating in a thesis and published works supported by classwork. Consequently, both masters and PhD students should consider their research interests and potential mentors before applying.

The department offers graduate teaching and research assistantships, each of which carries a stipend and remission of tuition. All applicants are considered for financial aid.

• Teaching assistants conduct laboratory sections and support instruction under the direction of a faculty instructor. This work deepens their understanding of core subjects while developing skills as an instructor.
• Research assistants conduct work on funded projects directed by a faculty principal investigator. 

Your application must include the following materials:

• Official transcripts from your prior degree(s)
• A personal statement of professional plans and goals 
• At least two letters of recommendation from persons able to evaluate your past performance and ability to do graduate work. Letter writers will independently submit their recommendations.
• If you have not earned a bachelor's or graduate (master's or doctoral) degree from a U.S. institution, you must take a test of academic English, such as the TOEFL, IELTS, PTE Academic or Duolingo tests. You may be exempt from this requirement if you earned your undergraduate or graduate degree from a country in which English is a commonly used language. For more details, follow guidelines provided by the graduate school.

Since our graduate programs are thesis driven, your personal statement should clearly identify your potential research mentor(s) and relate their work and any potential projects you discussed with them to your goals. Therefore, it is essential that you contact potential mentors prior to submitting your application. 

The application deadline for fall admission for both degrees is January 15.
