Why are you interested in healthcare?
I'm interested in healthcare because I love the human connection I am able to make with others while providing care.
What is your target profession (eg, physician, dentist, PA, etc)?
Physician
Why did you choose the Temple CST Postbacc Program?
I chose the Temple CST Postbacc Program because I was already living in Philadelphia for several years, and when I decided to go back to school for pre-medicine courses, I decided to take them at Temple. Philadelphia is a great city and has so many great opportunities to offer for pre-medical students!
How did the program impact you and your healthcare journey?
Because of the program, I was better prepared to tackle the coursework in my current medical school program. As a non-trad student, it had been over four years since I had taken a full credit load. Aside from medical school preparedness, I met some really amazing people in my class! I finished the program in 2020, but I still keep in touch regularly with many of my old classmates.
What is one thing you love about Philadelphia?
One thing I love about Philadelphia is the diversity in the community and the opportunities that the city has to offer. I met many amazing individuals who inspired me to choose a career in medicine, and that driving force made my decision to choose medical school more concrete.
Tell us one fun fact about yourself.
I once boarded and took the wrong plane to the wrong destination.
How about a second fun fact?
I enjoy dancing and I was on a competitive hip-hop dance team in college.
If you could only eat one food/meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Vietnamese Pho.
What is a quote that inspires you?
Try. Fail. Learn!
What is something that you've been doing during the pandemic and are pleasantly surprised that you enjoy?
During the pandemic I got really into yoga and meditation, and I also started to regularly meet with a therapist.
If you could summarize the Temple CST Postbacc Program in 5 words, what would they be?
Supportive, challenging, rewarding, fun, and fleeting!
What would be one tip you would give to students about applying to or preparing for medical/dental/PA/etc school?
Aside from being absolutely certain about your decision to apply to professional school, make sure you don't regret it and make the most of it. The time in professional school goes by so quickly and even though it brings great challenges, it gives you the opportunity to grow as a person and grow closer to your goals as a professional.

I am originally from Williamsport, PA but I have lived in the Harrisburg, PA area since 2016.
Why are you interested in healthcare?
My interest in healthcare was sparked by a childhood experience. I was eight years old when I fell off a picnic table while playing catch with my father. I was overcome with immense sharp pain from arm. My family took me to the local emergency department. I received x-rays and a sling before being sent home. The pain was so severe I couldn’t sleep. Early the next morning, our phone rang. My parents took me to the hospital again, but this time we went to an office building. We were met by an orthopedic surgeon who said my elbow has been dislocated and it needed to be reset. First, they attempted manual reduction by pushing, pulling, and yanking on my arm. Even with the anesthetic, I could feel terrible pain. This was ultimately unsuccessful. The next step was surgery. At eight years old, surgery is quite scary. From the time we arrived in the medical office there was a gentleman who was helping to calm my family and I. After hearing the news about needing surgery, he talked with my parents. I watched as the anxiety slowly faded from their faces. I was struck with clarity. This is what I wanted to do as a career. I knew I wanted a career in healthcare.
What is your target profession (eg, physician, dentist, PA, etc)?
My target profession is a physician.
Why did you choose the Temple CST Postbacc Program?
I chose the Temple Post-Bacc program because it was the closest, one-year, organized program. I knew Temple University was well respected in the education realm and through their rigorous program would prepare me for the demands of medical school.
How did the program impact you and your healthcare journey?
The Post-Bacc program further reinforced my desire to pursue medicine. It also showed me that I had the ability to handle medical school curriculum. This gave me confidence that I was pursuing the right path.
What is one thing you love about Philadelphia?
I always lived in smaller cities, so Philadelphia was eye opening. My favorite thing about Philadelphia was the variety. The city has everything you could ask for from cultural cuisine to historical sites to escape rooms, there is no shortage of things to do.
Tell us one fun fact about yourself.
While in the post-bacc program, I continued to live in Harrisburg, PA so everyday my commute was about three hours one-way. I did this while married to a beautiful wife who was pregnant. I earned a 4.0 GPA, and I am not considered a brainiac, you too can do this!
How about a second fun fact?
Prior to the post-bacc program I was employed as a travel nurse specializing in critical care.
If you could only eat one food/meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
I could eat Masita de Puerco from Los Tres Cubanos in Harrisburg forever! So delicious!
What is a quote that inspires you?
One of the quotes I have used to guide me in life is “I would rather try and fail than to never have tried at all.”
What is something that you've been doing during the pandemic and are pleasantly surprised that you enjoy?
I have regularly avoided online learning because I grew up in a time where classroom learning was the only option. The pandemic has forced me to participate in online learning and I have found that it can be more enjoyable. While I still go to the school to watch lectures, I have more control over my schedule since the lectures are recorded.
If you could summarize the Temple CST Postbacc Program in 5 words, what would they be?
Comprehensive, rigorous, thoughtful, student-focused, and inclusive.
What would be one tip you would give to students about applying to or preparing for medical/dental/PA/etc school?
Find what makes you unique and drive that home in your applications. Many students have solid grades and strong MCAT scores. You don’t have to build an orphanage in Tibet to be unique. It could be a hobby, volunteer experience, or something else. Tell the admissions committee what makes you, you.

Why are you interested in healthcare?
Coming from an engineering background, I have learned the distinction between solving problems and helping those who are inflicted by a problem. There is something magical about the interaction between a patient and a healthcare provider that I find incredibly fulfilling and unlike any other career.
What is your target profession (eg, physician, dentist, PA, etc)?
Physician
Why did you choose the Temple CST Postbacc Program?
Qualities that I wanted from a post-bacc program were a small cohort size and attention from the faculty. Both of which the Temple Postbacc program provided in full.
How did the program impact you and your healthcare journey?
Personally, it did not change me that much. It did test my resolve, as I took the program during the pandemic, and it helped reaffirm that medicine was the path I wanted to pursue.
Tell us one fun fact about yourself.
I was born with one less adult tooth than the average human! Between my two bottom canine teeth (the pointier ones!), I have three teeth, but people normally have four.
How about a second fun fact?
I've broken bones two times. I used to figure skate, and while practicing a jump I fell and landed on my leg in an awkward way causing the fracture. No surgery thankfully, but definitely the most physically painful experience of my life.
If you could only eat one food/meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

What is a quote that inspires you?
A Chinese proverb that goes along the lines of: Don't be afraid of being slow, be afraid of standing still.
What is something that you've been doing during the pandemic and are pleasantly surprised that you enjoy?

If you could summarize the Temple CST Postbacc Program in 5 words, what would they be?
Fun, motivating, dedicated, pivotal, concise
What would be one tip you would give to students about applying to or preparing for medical/dental/PA/etc school?
I absolutely despised the application process. One thing that helped me a lot was remembering the reasons for why I want to go to medicine--like a short two-sentence thing that I just verbalize in my head or out loud.

Why are you interested in healthcare?
I was always passionate about being able to serve others and I loved learning about the human body. In medicine, I get to combine them both. I was first an RN in the emergency department and then chose to attend medical school to become a physician. There were areas of healthcare that I wanted to address, which would have required me to become a physician.
What is your target profession (eg, physician, dentist, PA, etc)?
ER Physician
Why did you choose the Temple CST Postbacc Program?
Graduating from Temple, it only felt right to complete my post bac program where it felt like home. All of my years at Temple were an amazing experience and I truly learned so much. Temple’s Post Bac Program allowed me to follow my aspirations of medical school, by providing me with pre-medical science courses and built-in MCAT prep. I couldn’t recommend a better route for anyone who either needs a career changing route into medicine like I needed, or for someone who simply needs to improve their grades and advance their application.
How did the program impact you and your healthcare journey?
Without this program I would not be where I am today. I was an RN who wanted to go back to medical school, and having no MCAT pre-req’s, I didn’t know where to go. At temple, I was able to take all of the courses and prep for the MCAT in just 1 year. Here I am 2 years later, and half way through my first year of medical school!
What is one thing you love about Philadelphia?
The food!

“It ain’t about how hard you hit, it’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done.” Rocky Balboa
What is something that you've been doing during the pandemic and are pleasantly surprised that you enjoy?

If you could summarize the Temple CST Postbacc Program in 5 words, what would they be?
Community, family, collaboration, support, togetherness
What would be one tip you would give to students about applying to or preparing for medical/dental/PA/etc school?
It’s a long and grueling process that takes tons of perseverance. Medical school itself feels the same way, but I know that in the end it will be worth it! Don’t get caught up in the stress and worries in the moment, continue to have a tunnel vision by seeing the goal that is closer than it feels.

Why did you choose the Temple CST Postbacc Program?
It really opened many doors for me. The professors and staff had a genuine interest in their students doing well. Most importantly, we had the chance to attend integrated Kaplan classes to improve our MCAT scores. For myself, I jumped 13 points!
How did the program impact you and your healthcare journey?

2 Corinthians 12: 7-10 "even though I have received such wonderful revelations from God. So to keep me from becoming proud, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger from Satan to torment me and keep me from becoming proud. Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away. Each time he said, 'My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.' So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong."

Since high school I’ve been heavily involved in elder and hospice care. Older people are so willing to share their life stories and I find caring for them extremely meaningful and rewarding. It excites me that I get to pursue a career which allows me to learn about the intricacies of the human body and disease, fosters an environment where I can always learn and grow, and allows me to connect with people.
What is your target profession (eg, physician, dentist, PA, etc)?
Physician
Why did you choose the Temple CST Postbacc Program?
I wanted to improve my GPA and make sure I was truly ready to face academic challenges of medical school. The coursework was geared toward MCAT preparation as well as subjects I’d see again one day. I heard great things about the program online and from friends who completed it and successfully matriculated into medical school.
How did the program impact you and your healthcare journey?
I’ve gained great friends and mentors who are extremely supportive. The content relevant study technique (CREST) sessions allowed me to explore various study strategies that I plan to use in medical school. After having completed the program I feel more confident in my study and time management skills and know I have a solid understanding of core science topics that I will encounter again.

What would be one tip you would give to students about applying to or preparing for medical/dental/PA/etc school?
There’s so much I can say after having gone through the application process twice, but to narrow it to one, take as much time as you can to pre-write, review and edit your application essays and personal statement. You’ve spent a lot of time building your pre-med resume with research, shadowing, clinical and/ or personal experiences that you can elaborate on so take the time to reflect on those moments!

I chose to do a Postbacc at Temple through the CST program because of their proven success and willingness to constantly grow and change the program so it can better serve its students. The support I received from Temple was unmatched another huge selling point for me. Through every step of the process from being a pre-professional student to becoming a professional student Temple was right there offering help.

I was born in Deal, NJ and spent most of my childhood and teenage years in Baltimore, MD.
Why are you interested in healthcare?
I specifically want to be part of making a change in creating more accessible healthcare and health education to vulnerable populations in urban areas. Becoming a physician means I can deliver on this mission in the most hands-on way, and I hope to build a practice in the future that generates enough profit to be able to provide free primary care services to those in need.
What is your target profession (eg, physician, dentist, PA, etc)?
My goal is to become a physician. I am not sure what specialty as of yet, but definitely something with a lot of procedures that allows me to have a continuous relationship with the patients I serve.
Why did you choose the Temple CST Postbacc Program?
I had not settled on the Temple CST postbac until my interview day. There are many different postbac programs on the east coast that I was fortunate to be accepted to, but what made Temple stand out to me was how genuinely loving and accepting the staff was during my interview. Dean Hershman emphasized how my religion and my familial goals would make me a great physician and encouraged me even at the interview to pursue my dreams, even before I was officially a student! The staff was all noticeably warm and kind, which to me was a distinguishing factor that made me drawn to join the Temple CST Postbacc.
How did the program impact you and your healthcare journey?
The program was integral to establishing confidence in myself that I would be able to realize my healthcare goals and opened my mind to osteopathic medicine, which I initially was not considering. When I asked Dean Hershman if I should avoid a DO school because of potential stigma towards DO physicians she said, "Stigma exists in the thoughts of small-minded people". This message resonated with me profoundly, and I think about this quote in relation to other forms of bias and stigma in society as well.
What is one thing you love about Philadelphia?
I love how friendly everyone in Philadelphia is! I felt like it was city living but with a suburban attitude. Great mix.

I am ignoring nutrition for this one. Warm cinnamon buns with a cappuccino. If we are being specific, this meal would always come from an artisan cafe, and my cappuccino would be in a large ceramic mug.

"...do not despise any man, and do not discriminate against anything, for there is no man without his hour and no thing without its place" (Ethics of Fathers)
What is something that you've been doing during the pandemic and are pleasantly surprised that you enjoy?
Pilates! I must be getting older because in my teens and early 20's I did not have the patience for pilates, but now I love it. Also, I started drinking kombucha and it is surprisingly good.
If you could summarize the Temple CST Postbacc Program in 5 words, what would they be?
Best pre-med experience that exists.
What would be one tip you would give to students about applying to or preparing for medical/dental/PA/etc school?
Take your time studying for your MCAT and invest in a personal tutor for at least a couple months. The MCAT is, as Dean Hershman says, the great gatekeeper to medical school, and it is not worth rushing. The higher your score, the more opportunities you will have, so it is worth taking the time to do as well as possible even if it means applying a cycle later.

Where are you from originally?
I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY.
Why are you interested in healthcare?
Growing up in a vulnerable immigrant family that remained below the poverty line for most of my life, I became aware of underprivileged communities harboring nonchalance for their deteriorating health conditions. Health or wellbeing were not prioritized in a family that was living in sub-par conditions. During high school, I adopted the role of a healthcare advocate for my elderly Pakistani parents and their friends by understanding and translating complex medical terminology from their doctors into Urdu for their comprehension. In an effort to further contribute to the health of my community, I later worked with non-profit organizations to improve the health conditions of undocumented restaurant workers and the homeless population. I began to understand that it felt good to do good, and I had decided that I wanted to pursue a career in which I could intertwine healthcare advocacy, altruism, and my long-standing enthusiasm for the biological sciences.
What is your target profession (eg, physician, dentist, PA, etc)?
Physician
Why did you choose the Temple CST Postbacc Program?
I was in search of a Postbacc program that would expose me to the rigors of medical school, and one that would report my grades in a separate Post-Baccalaureate transcript rather than combining it with my undergraduate transcript. I believe that it is because of this distinction, medical schools were able to see that I was capable of excelling in a science-dominated curriculum.
How did the program impact you and your healthcare journey?
It was definitely a very challenging program and many of the topics I learned primed me for my first year as a medical student. It helped me understand and gain confidence in my own abilities. Most of all, it helped me gain some invaluable connections with fellow students with whom I am still in contact with and hope to work with in the future.
What is one thing you love about Philadelphia?
The parks! Spruce Street Harbor Park was probably my favorite. It had such a beautiful waterfront view and was the absolute perfect place for an evening stroll to decompress from the day.
Tell us one fun fact about yourself.
In my free time (does that even exist?), I like to draw! I recently began using an app called Procreate (peculiar name, I agree) and have been creating fun drawings of my friends to give them as gifts!
How about a second fun fact?
I am an aunt to 16 nephews and nieces, and my oldest nephew is a freshman in college! I come from a big family, and have 7 siblings, and I became an aunt to my oldest nephew at 8 years old. Eid celebrations at the grandparents' are always hectic but I wouldn't have them any other way!
If you could only eat one food/meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Before medical school I probably would have said tacos, but since I've moved out to Western Pennsylvania for school, I have deeply missed South Asian food! Every time I go back home to visit, I'm sure to pack some fresh food to take back with me.
What is a quote that inspires you?
"...a society has no chance of success if its women are uneducated, Laila. No chance." A Thousand Splendid Suns, by Khaled Hosseini
What is something that you've been doing during the pandemic and are pleasantly surprised that you enjoy?
I've started going to the gym more often! I never liked going to the gym because it always felt like work to me. Ever since starting medical school, I've recognized it as an opportunity to step away from my laptop screen and decompress for a little while, and I feel stronger and healthier in the process.
If you could summarize the Temple CST Postbacc Program in 5 words, what would they be?
Challenging, uplifting, enjoyable, supportive, effective
What would be one tip you would give to students about applying to or preparing for medical/dental/PA/etc school?
Don't try to be someone you're not. I know people have said this before, but I've personally found it to be true. Your experiences make you unique, no matter what they are. I did not do any undergraduate research and was very concerned that this would mean my rejection from medical school, but I expressed my desire to pursue healthcare in my personal statement and backed it up with my grades in the post-bacc program. All it takes is for one person on the admissions board to see something special in you through your personal statement and extracurricular activities.

I am from Delaware, but my family is originally from Nigeria
Why are you interested in healthcare?
My interest in healthcare began with my grandfather’s Parkinson’s disease. After meeting others with similar illnesses through volunteering and scribing, I became even more interested in healthcare. One of my biggest goals in life is to be able to serve others to the best of my ability and I believe a career in healthcare is where I can have the greatest impact on the lives of others.
What is your target profession (eg, physician, dentist, PA, etc)?
Physician
Why did you choose the Temple CST Postbacc Program?
I wanted to make myself more competitive for medical school and felt that Temple’s program would be the best place to do that. Their program included everything I was looking for in a Postbacc program (advising, MCAT prep, upper-level classes, etc.) and after I met the administration during my interview, my heart was set on going there.
How did the program impact you and your healthcare journey?
The professors in Temple’s program were amazing. Not only did they teach their classes with MCAT content in mind, but they also made sure that each student had the best opportunity to succeed. Administration also made sure to check in on students frequently. If a student ever struggled academically or personally, our advisors always thoroughly talked with us and made sure we were making the best decisions to be successful. I left the program so much more prepared for the MCAT and with a much better understanding of the application process.

I realized late in college that I wanted a career of lifelong learning that allows me to study the puzzle that is the human body, while being able to be an advocate and serve. Why did you choose the Temple CST Postbacc Program?
I wanted to be in a program that offered upper level science courses so I could strengthen my GPA through rigorous courses that showed dental schools I was prepared for their curriculum. I honestly had no idea what a Postbacc program was until I started applying to dental schools and realized I might not get in that cycle. So I starting researching and found the program at Temple, it sounded like the perfect program. It had all the core classes and DAT prep incorporated into the curriculum. Without this program I don’t think I would’ve gotten into dental school. The CST Postbacc at Temple provided me with all the tools and knowledge to be successful in the application process, each faculty member is so caring and truly wants you to succeed so they are always pushing you to be your best. I can also confidently say that the classes I took at Temple prepared me for D1 year. So far everything we have discussed in the first month of school has basically been review so I’m not as stressed as the rest of my classmates. I also know that the connections I made during my time at Temple will be lifelong, if I ever need anything in my career I can count on those people to be there.

Why are you interested in healthcare?
I enjoy putting others' needs before mine and helping individuals through difficult situations. Through these moments is when I feel like I am flourishing the most and succeeding my ambition to be a positive impact for others. As a child, I used to hate going to the dentist, I was a nervous patient with high anxiety. When a new dentist joined the office that I was a patient to, her calm and friendly demeanor was very appealing to me. This new dentist was nothing but understanding and patient with my fears. Because of her caring persona and motivation to help me eliminate my nerves, I developed an appreciation for her work. At fourteen, I began working for my pediatric dentist and I learned numerous procedures, coping mechanisms and the use of dental instruments. My personal experience of overcoming my dental fears inspired me to pursue a future within this profession so I too, could help and heal patients through the art of dentistry.
What is your target profession (eg, physician, dentist, PA, etc)?
Dentist, DMD
Why did you choose the Temple CST Postbacc Program?
I decided to enroll in the Temple CST Post-Bacc program because I knew that this fast-paced program would challenge me academically in ways that I haven’t experienced previously and knew it would prepare me for professional school. I also enjoyed that Temple University was located in a city that I have never lived in before. Additionally, this program also attracted me that it was completed a student body of like-minded people who also needed an extra enhancement with their academics similar to me.
How did the program impact you and your healthcare journey?
My top priority while enrolled in the ACHS program was to improve by science GPA to make my application more competitive when applying for dental school. However, Temple University and the CST Post-Bacc Program also improved my professionalism, self-confidence and expanded my network circle. During my time as a student in the post-bacc program, I joined the Temple University Pre-Dental Health Society and Operation Smile of Temple University, and I also volunteered as a dental assistant at Philadelphia FIGHT, a service organization that provides healthcare to individuals living with AIDS. My involvement in these organizations were due to my enrollment as a student at Temple University and introduced me to new skills and knowledge within dentistry that I would not have been able to experience elsewhere.
What is one thing you love about Philadelphia?
While living in Philadelphia I thoroughly enjoyed how easy it was to get around the city. The public transit was incredibly easy to navigate but mostly I loved that I was able to walk everywhere! I loved their Chinatown, the fun shops on South St. and my favorite neighborhood to explore was Fairmont. Every weekend I would take four-mile walks through Fairmont and all the way to the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Tell us one fun fact about yourself.
I love food! I enjoy cooking and trying new foods. While in undergrad I had my own cooking show, “Fine dining with Cori Fine.”
How about a second fun fact?
I drove across the country from New York to Southern California prior to starting dental school! I got accepted into Western University of Health Sciences, which is located in Pomona, Ca. My favorite stops during the drive were in Boulder, Colorado and Cedar City, Utah. It was an experience of a lifetime and a great bonding opportunity that I had with my father.
If you could only eat one food/meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
This is a very hard choice, but it would have to be either chicken parmigiana or Chinese noodles!
What is a quote that inspires you?
Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new. ― Albert Einstein
What is something that you've been doing during the pandemic and are pleasantly surprised that you enjoy?
Prior to the pandemic, I did not hike much. I was always very active and enjoyed being outdoors, but I never enjoyed hiking. During the peak of the pandemic, I spent more time outside to compartmentalize my thoughts and forced myself to explore the woods and overcome my irrational fear of being attacked by spiders. Yes, I know it was always highly unlikely, but having arachnophobia does that to you! I ended up seeing my neighborhood from a different view, and when I drove across country to California, I completed amazing hikes along the way in Colorado and Utah with the most breathtaking views I have ever seen!
If you could summarize the Temple CST Postbacc Program in 5 words, what would they be?
Challenging, Rewarding, Successful, Encouraging, and Transformative
What would be one tip you would give to students about applying to or preparing for medical/dental/PA/etc school?
When applying or while being enrolled in professional school, remember that you are on your own individual path. This is something that I have to remind myself daily when I am in situations where I may see other students performing better than me in clinic. You do not know how many hours your classmates may have studied prior to their exams or their previous experiences before their enrollment. Continuously comparing your successes to others will make you distracted and lose sight of your expected results. Instead of using this energy focusing on what others are doing and overlooking on your existing talents, take a step back and think, what can I do to improve myself from the day before.
