In 2007, Rising Above the Gathering Storm endorsed sweeping changes in both K-12 and higher education that would enhance the scientific and technological enterprise in the United States to ensure the country could successfully compete in the global economy of the 21st century.

The report’s first recommendation, “increase America’s talent pool by vastly improving K–12 science and mathematics education,” included action items such as annually recruiting 10,000 new science teachers and strengthening the skills of 250,000 current teachers.

Twelve years on, has the U.S. met those worthy goals? What is the state of science education in the country today, both for K-12 students and the teachers who instruct them? And what steps must we take now to ensure young people, teachers and the nation are ready for a global economy dependent on innovation and discovery. Leaders in the field will explore the impact of The Gathering Storm and where we go next.
